Energetic Healing + Processing Trauma

How I overcame my traumatic cancer diagnosis, treatment and healing...

In 2019, I was lucky enough to have successful Oncology treatment for cervical cancer. However, the race of being diagnosed with such a terrifying disease, then thrown into IVF treatment to freeze some of my eggs, before my radical hysterectomy and pelvic radiotherapy, in such a short time, was all a lot to process at the young age of 27.

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it’s all systems go. Oncology consultants are keen to get the ball rolling with treatment as soon as possible, for obvious reasons. This gives the patient very little time to get over the shock of a cancer diagnosis, the treatment to come, the risks involved and the long and short term side effects that the treatment may cause.

Unfortunately, the healthcare system here in Ireland does not prioritize mental health, and because I didn’t receive treatment in the main cancer hospital, I found it impossible to avail of any complimentary services such as counselling. I wasn’t working at the time, so I couldn’t afford to pay €60+ for a private session, so I began to explore other options.

The more I spoke to cancer friends/patients, the more I heard the term ‘energy medicine’. I was a little alien and skeptical of this, but I also realised that I had very little to lose as my mental health was taking a toll on my physical health.

To my astonishment, I discovered that my own aunt was a Reiki practitioner. She of course offered to give me complimentary sessions.

Deirdre has a beautiful therapy healing room, filled with fairy lights and sparkling crystals, the aroma of rose scented incense and a cosy- looking therapy bed. Before the session began, we had a quick consultation in which we discussed my ailments, medications and emotional stressors. I then lay up on the bed and the treatment began.

Deirdre sat behind my head on a small stool, hovering her hands over my head. She did this for a few minutes before moving down to different areas of my body, cleansing each chakra. Chakras refer to various energy centers in your body that correspond to specific nerve bundles and internal organs. The seven major chakras run from the base of the spine to the top of the head. If these energy centers get blocked, we may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra.

As Deirdre did this, I felt an emotional release as tears streamed down my face. I tried hard to not lose myself completely to the emotion, but I wasn't strong enough. She began explaining to me that this was normal and expected as we are energy beings.

As Einstein said himself, “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transmuted.”

Humans vibrate moving energy that is stagnant in the body. This can be due to some form of trauma. If this energy remains stagnant, it can manifest itself and cause further problems for our emotional, mental and physical health. Deirdre continued explaining that all trauma lives in our cells and in order to heal we must acknowledge it, not bury it.

Reiki practitioners and other energy practitioners do not heal us themselves; they support the client to go inward in order to heal themselves. They are merely a vessel for the healing to take place through. When we get still, we gain clarity and answers to issues that we could not seek before. We gain a new perspective on situations we could not before and so, we can overcome these life obstacles.

Trauma can be different for all of us, some may find it triggering to recall and relive the trauma they once endured. This is why the energy practitioners create a safe space, so that the client can feel heard and supported.

I attended a few sessions with Deirdre as much as possible and found the whole experience so calming and rebalancing.

Other healing modalities that I found supportive are meditation and mindfulness. They are now part of my daily routine. I highly recommend you try them too.
