Crystal Clear about Crystals?
Following all the recent talk of cosmic energy due to the Samhain Blue Moon we just had, I thought now would be the perfect time to introduce my love of crystals to you all, how they work and could work for you too...
Crystals have been used for thousands of years for religious, healing and ornamental uses. There is even record of them being used in the Bible and Chinese Medical texts.
However crystals seem to be making themselves noticed once again, particularly with Millennials and Generation Zs.
For me personally, I use crystals to keep me grounded and energised, they have become my spiritual go to when I feel lost. I find myself asking the Universe to look out for me rather than praying to a God as I once did growing up in Catholic Ireland. Perhaps this is the same for others, discovering spirituality via ancient mystical practices instead of following traditional faiths.
What are crystals?
Crystals are natural elements formed deep within the Earth over many years. A pure crystal has an organised crystal system, a lattice pattern and unique properties. In saying that, some crystals are also minerals and rocks, for example, Agate. But a true crystal generally differs from rocks and minerals due to the reasons above.
Where do crystals come from?
Natural crystals are formed deep underground over thousands, or in some cases even millions of years. This is why they have been used for centuries with the belief that they contain the Earth's energy.
As the interest of crystals has accelerated, they can now be grown in labs to help reach consumer demands. These crystals are typically used in jewelry making. As these are manmade and quickly made, it is thought that they hold less powers because they don't contain the energy of the Earth. However, these crystals still contain their own energy, as does all matter.
How do crystals work?
Although there is no scientific evidence to prove the healing powers of crystals, quantum physics shows that all matter contains its own energy or vibrations / electricity. Crystals contain both pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity. Piezoelectricity causes materials to gain an electric charge from the exposure of mechanical pressure. For example, quartz crystal exhibits the piezoelectric effect. Similarly, certain materials gain an electric charge when exposed to heat, this is pyroelectricity. The temperature change in the material alters the position of its atoms, causing the polarization of the material. This change in polarization of the material causes an electric charge generation, also known as a vibration. An example of pyroelectric effect is tourmaline crystal. This is why crystals are used in engineering.
Crystals are often a large component of Chinese holistic therapies. In this way, they are applied to our seven chakras, also known as our seven energy centres. Our chakras are located throughout our body, at the crown of our head, our brow (A.K.A. our third eye), our throat, our heart, our stomach (A.K.A. our solar plexus), our lower abdomen (A.K.A. our sacral) and the base of our spine (A.K.A. our root).
It is believed that these energy centres can become blocked and so, cause imbalances and ailments in our mind, body or spirit, effecting our overall wellbeing. It is thought that when we unblock our chakras by treating our energy centres with the energies / vibrations of the crystals, we can achieve homeostasis -(I discuss homeostasis here).
In simpler terms, we all omit different vibrations depending on how we are feeling. When we are excited our vibrations are very high and when we are heartbroken or grieving they are very low. We can balance these vibrations by using the vibrations in certain crystals. This is called Vibrational Medicine.
Chromotherapy and how it works
Chromotherapy is an ancient holistic treatment. It involves using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in homeostasis. Different colours possess different frequencies of a specific vibration, and each vibration is related to different physical symptoms. Modern-day chromotherapy uses light to transmit colours with each colour benefiting our mental and physical well-being in different ways. For example, yellow dispels negative thoughts as it is for positivity, purple calms the body and mind, aiding sleep. This is why you should pay attention to the colours of the crystals that you are attracted to, as you will read below.
Choosing your crystal
When choosing your crystals, go with your instincts, paying attention to which ones are drawing your attention the most. It is important to examine each crystal, feeling them and studying their colours and patterns. This will help you in realising which ones are speaking to you the loudest.
However, if you are searching for a crystal to help you with a specific issue then you should ask shop clerks for assistance as they will guide you in the right direction of the crystal that will benefit you the most.
I would also advise picking up a crystal guide, most of my crystal knowledge comes from mine, Astrid Carvel's 'The Little Book of Crystals', and Karen Frazier's 'Crystals for Beginners'.
How to use your crystals
I like to run myself a hot bath with a bathbomb, magnesium bath salts and my favourite crystals. This way, I can best absorb their energies. I also like to meditate with them, getting in the zone with my favourite ones in my hands or on my body, setting my intentions for the day and week ahead or saying positive affirmations to myself and to my crystals. I find this very grounding.
You can also purchase drink bottles that contain large crystals inside of them, enabling you to drink their powerful properties.
Taking care of your crystals
It is important to cleanse your crystals once a month, ridding them of the energies that they have absorbed from over use or from their environment. By doing so, they will be of more beneficial use to you.
You can cleanse your crystals by leaving them in direct moonlight. I like to leave mine on the windowsill or in a bowl of water outside during a full moon so that they are also being returned to the earth. You can also use a singing bowl, burn sage or palo santo around your crystals to cleanse them too.
Give it a go!
It is often thought that crystals only heal individuals through a placebo effect. Nevertheless even if this is so, the placebo effect heightens the inner healing powers that we all contain. Engaging our inner healing results in only positive outcomes for us such as; improvements in thoughts and feelings of depression, chronic fatigue, chronic pain and so much more.
So if there's no harm, then why not give it a go yourself? See what crystals you are most drawn to, you might discover something wonderful about yourself.
